In A 'Hypocrite' Funhouse Mirror

Not all was work and no play during the video shoot for their 'Hypocrite" video. After ll, what would you do if you had rented out an entire carnival? The band pauses for a reflective moment in a funhouse mirror.

'Select' :: May 1996

Twenty years ago - Emma and Miki, in the pages of Select magazine, published on the eve of their 1996 North American tour.

"I do have a real problem writing songs about stuff that I'm right in the middle of actually... John used to get pissed off that I never wrote any songs about him, but I used to say, "Well you know all the songs I write about people are really horrible!'" -Miki

LUSH Photo of the Day

This has always been one of my favorite publicity shots of the band. Great that now we have the whole set!

LUSH - Control Freaks

Well what's all this then?? It's a bit of a filler piece that was shown on Channel 4 around 1996-ish during the holidays. But what makes this unique is that the 4-minute show features the one, the only Phil, Miki, Emma and Chris - aka LUSH. Aren't they all a wonderful lot? So there's  no music from the band, no interviews either, however as the uploader keenly points out: "...but it's rather charming in a lo-fi kinda way." And that's something that every true Lushhead can appreciate. Cheers and Long Live Rock!

LUSH's Last TV Appearance - Sep 8, 1996

It was September 8, 1996, on this blogger's birthday, that Lush appeared on First Cut in San Francisco. It was 19 years ago...

This is Lush's very last TV appearance, with a brief interview and a performance of Ladykillers and 500 (Shake Baby Shake). It was recorded the day after their show at the Fillmore.

Summer of Lush

Another summer has wound down. With timely topics being a bit dry recently, now is a good time to share some excellent photography... which just so happens to tie-in with Lush's final American tour 15 years ago this summer.

The first example is a solo shot of a black-rooted, flamy red-haired Miki onstage! This nice catch was taken at Toad's Place, New Haven, Connecticut in August of 1996. Photographer John Anthony Wilcox, a Lush fan, witnessed the band live a number of times... lucky guy!

Next in line is a fifteen photo set taken by Steve Latham during a June 6th 1996 performance. The shots feature the entire band, jamming it out at Waterplace Park, Providence, Rhode Island!

And after enjoying the rich imagery of Phil, Emma, Miki and Chris, do what I did and let Mr. Latham know what you think...

Tokyo, Japan :: September 18, 1996

15 Years Ago Today...

September 18, 1996, Lush performs at the Shinjuku Liquid Room, Tokyo, Japan. This was to be the final live performance... yet for fifteen years onward now the band still lives on in the hearts and minds of a strong following!

Up on YouTube, you can view the videotaped performance of Single Girl (Live) from this very gig (which so happened to be shared here in a earlier post).

Be sure to pour over ALL the Tokyo show's vivid imagery by photographer Takamori Fukuda/Brownhat over on Bill's paramount Lush site lightfromadeadstar.org.

And as if that's not enough (because it isn't really, now, is it?!) there's this gem just in from lushlive.com's Lush and Miki Berenyi Facebook page:

Now available - The LAST Lush show, performed 15 years ago today in Tokyo is available for free download! Don't forget to also get the artwork at the site www.lushlive.com in the audio section. Enjoy!! http://www.lushlive.com/audio/tokyo/09_18_96.zip

Unreleased Recordings Coming to Lush Live

Seen over on the Lush and Miki Berenyi page on Facebook...

"As you may know, this year is the 15th anniversary of Lush's final tour (can you believe it's been that long already?). It was the first and only time I had the honor of seeing them. I'm going to unleash two audio gems from that tour within a month's time. I surfaced these shows many years ago and to this day only myself and perhaps 4 or 5 other people have them. Soon you can all enjoy them! Stay tuned..."

We can look forward to seeing these two unreleased recordings being made available on Eric's LushLive.com.

Final TV Appearance - San Francisco - Sep 8, 1996

Today's my birthday. Being a Lush fan, I can't help but think of this September 8 gig, the band's final televised appearance, which recently has been uploaded to YouTube by Bill of Lush Remembered....

This is Lush's very last TV appearance, with a brief interview and a performance of Ladykillers and 500 (Shake Baby Shake). It was recorded the day after their show at the Fillmore.

Lush's Final TV Appearance - San Francisco - Sep 8, 1996

Their last television appearance, on my own birthday in fact... quite sad really...

Lush "Ciao!" Live in S.F.

Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, California, September 7, 1996

I have the unofficial VHS video of this live performance, produced under the title "Complete Lush." Yes, I admit it, I actually own a bootleg of live Lush *gasp* I would glady, EAGERLY prefer to shell-out for any official video. Perhaps I'd even consider offering up an expendable arm and a leg *hint to the companies* But after all these years I'm beginning to lose hope that this will ever happen.

Anyway.... Here's the set list:
  1. Heavenly Nobodies
  2. Childcatcher
  3. Lit Up
  4. 500
  5. Single Girl
  6. Downer
  7. Kiss Chase
  8. Deluxe
  9. Light From A Dead Star
  10. Last Night
  11. Hypocrite
  12. Runaway
  13. For Love
  14. Ladykillers
  15. Ciao! (with Jarvis)
  16. Sweetness And Light

In the video there are some lively exchanges Miki has with the crowds, and a lovely bit in honor of Chris's birthday (the day before Your's Truely). Chris is surprised, all smiles and maybe a bit embarrassed by taking the spotlight.

Bittersweet really, in a month it would all be over...
