And here she is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b073j45c

Miki from Lush

Radcliffe and Maconie Listen in pop-out player
Berenyi from 90s shoegaze pioneers band, Lush.
Formed in London in 1988 by childhood friends Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Lush also included Chris Acland on drums and Phil King on bass (originally Steve Rippon, who left in 1990). Signed to 4AD in 1989, over the course of 3 full-length albums, an early mini-album and a number of EPs and singles, they went on to sharpen their pop sound, outliving and outgrowing the 'scene' with which they were initially associated. Miki's here to chat about their new EP, which was produced by Jim Abbiss (Adele, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys) & Daniel Hunt (Ladytron) at Abbiss' own Lime Green Monkeys studio.

Remembering John Peel

It was 11 years ago today, October 25, 2004, that we lost John Peel.

As stated in Wikipedia: He was one of the first broadcasters to play progressive rock records on British radio, and he is widely acknowledged for promoting artists working in various genres. Fellow DJ Paul Gambaccini described him as "the most important man in music for about a dozen years".

Mr. John devoted one of his legendary Peel Sessions featuring Lush:
Lush - Peel Session, 23 January 1990
Recordings: 'Hey Hey Helen', 'Leaves Me Cold' and 'Breeze'

'Hey Hey Helen'

'Breeze'

All three recordings together: 'Breeze', 'Hey Hey Helen' and 'Leaves Me Cold'

Get Your Tickets

A ticket from Lush's first European venue on the second leg of their Split Tour back in 1994, the Zapp Club in Brighton, headlining for Echo Belly and These Animal Men, dated for the 5th of September.

As this was sponsored by Radio 1 FM, accordingly this concert was broadcast on Radio 1. Which means that there are bootleg recordings of the event, floating around out there.

The gig received the typical scathing review in Melody Maker, which was the fashionable journalism slant of the day. I think it can be safely argued that Lush's music did not fade away as some had thought. Can the same be said of an arrogant little music journalist? :)

Emma and Miki's Formative Five Now Archived

Lush / RRR 102.7FM Wednesday 23rd March

from Scenic Veins Scenic Greens -
Posted by: "RiSH Publicity - Brian McDonald"

Miki and Emma's "Formative 5" feature on The Golden Age of Piracy on RRR 102.7FM (Melbourne) will go to air this coming Wednesday 23rd March. It's on from 10PM to 12AM AEST (OZ) which is 11AM to 1PM if you're in the UK.
(According to the online timezone converter, it places the show at Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 6:00:00AM to 8:00AM CDT for my neck of the woods in the US.)

"As part of the 4AD roster, Lush captivated the entire world and have a sound that is one of the most recognisable of the 90's. Hinged around the twin guitar attack of Miki Berenyi & Emma Anderson and their intoxicating vocal harmonies, they became the poster girls of the UK indie scene, while at the same time releasing albums that have well and truly stood the test of time, such as 1992's Spooky. They broke up in 1998, and Miki has not given a single interview since 1996... that is until they spoke to Tristen from their respective homes in London to not only talk about their time in Lush but to take you through their Formative Five, the five songs that most inspired them. This will be a very special edition of the show, and certainly one not to miss." The Golden Age of Piracy

Emma & Miki to be on Formative 5

Hot off the presses... or as in this case, the Web...

We're excited to let you know that two of our all-time favourite songwriters, EMMA ANDERSON and MIKI BERENYI of LUSH have kindly agreed to be special guests for the 'Formative 5' segment (for "The Golden Age of Piracy" show) on RRR 102.7FM (Melbourne, Australia) in March!

Emma's no stranger to Australian community radio, completing many interviews in support of the "Sing-Sing & I" album release a few years back, but it's been a while since Miki has graced the airwaves down under!

'Formative 5' features recording artists who share their thoughts on five different songs that helped shape, influence or inspire their writing, or sound. Hosted by Tristen Harris. Tonight's guest is Andy Bell of Ride (23rd February).

Keep checking back at www.facebook.com/rishpublicity for details - we'll let you know when it's in the can and an air-date has been confirmed.

Lush: The John Peel Sessions 1990

It takes a little patience to track down anything regarding Lush on the Peel Sessions. To be honest, I still haven't uncovered what I've really been after, the complete works. Do know that the date for the recording was February 19, 1990 and broadcast broadcast March 22 1990, which included "Hey Hey Helen, "Leaves Me Cold" and "Breeze."

There may have been another Peel recording made later on, or maybe not – one which included "Blackout" (from Split in 1994) which which has been mislabled as being of the '90 session... or maybe this has been incorrectly associated with Peel all together... See why my head is starting to churn from sorting this out?

Such a shame these were never released together as an EP (though one song, "Breeze" I think, is included on one of the many Peel Sessions compilations - "The New Season" is one containing 20 British bands). No doubt such an offering would have been in every Lush fan's arsenal if it had.

However, I do have a few free downloadables below to share; three vids through youTube, the others are mp3s of "Hey Hey Helen, "Leaves Me Cold" and "Breeze", which are slightly cut off, obviously recorded off a broadcast. These are simply lurvely renditions of the three songs recorded as only the late great John Peel could do. Not at all like "remixes" of the album versions, but still totally Lush sounding. Full guitars thrumming, yet they're still etheriel, a bit more like the band would naturally sound live with maybe a little hint of dare I say a 'darker' feel as with "Leaves Me Cold." And both "Breeze" and "Hey Hey Helen" are arguable as good as the original studio versions.

Sure would love to have heard the whole segment in it's entirety, though.

'Breeze' on Peel

'Blackout' on Peel, would this have been from a later session from the three recorded in March 1990?

All three recordings from the 1990 Session, if you don't mind the funky "home-grown" graphics *smirk*

And finally . . .

TRACKLIST
1 Hey Hey Helen
2 Leaves Me Cold
3 Breeze

I wouldn't share this link if these songs were official releases. To the best of my knowledge they are not (unfortunately). With that said, I will not post any full studio song much less full-length album for free distribution, this is NOT the way to promote your all-time fave band... it's just not Proper!

So... don't let me catch you doing it :P

update:
I found a few extra details and a correction to add concerning the tracks and dates.

Lush - Peel Session, in 1991 (Feb. 1990 is likely the correct date)
recorded Breeze, Hey Hey Helen and Leaves Me Cold

There are some recordings currently in circulation online which are incorrectly attributed as being from another Peel Session in 1993 (Blackout, Childcatcher, Kiss Chase and Lit Up). Lush only had one Peel Session. These other tracks were not recorded for John Peel, but were live recordings for The Evening Session with Steve Lamaq and Jo Whiley in June 1994.

Create a Lush Station on Pandora Radio

Listen to Shadw's Lush Radio ...it's Spiff!

There's a lot of online radio resources out there.... probably too many.

One I've recently played with is the Pandora service. You enter a band or song that you want to seed your listening on and it will customize a made-to-order station. The best part is you can thumbs up or down individual songs that Pandora matches to your musical profile. The more feedback you give, the better it works. And it's put me on to some new artists I was not aware of. The 'music genome' as it's called is not perfect, but I think Pandora is as good as it gets for radio listening over playlist listening.
